Interpretation of diamond coating tools
The biggest advantage of Diamond coating tools is longer tool life than non-coating tools. But the tool life will be different depending on the coating quality and the materials to be processed. We will share you some common sense on choosing the diamond coating tools.
1. The difference of the coatings
Diamond coating can be divided into 2 types: Pure diamond coating and amorphous diamond coating. Amorphous diamond coating tool adopt a kind of Carbon film with PVD methods. It not only has a part of the diamond SP3 key, but also has a part of the carbon SP2 key, the film hardness is very high, but lower than the hardness of diamond film, the thickness of the diamond film will thinner than we usually deposited diamond film. When graphite is processed, the life of amorphous diamond coated tools is 2-3 times that of uncoated carbide tools.
Compared with PVD diamond coating tools, CVD coating use pure diamond coating with CVD process. When graphite is processed, the tool life will be about 12~20 times of carbide insert, which can help reduce the times of changing insert, and improve the precision.
For example, in the process of machining Graphite electrode, the cutting tips will be easily wear and become not sharp because of the high hardness of the graphite, the efficiency will be very low. And the graphite is removed with micro-dust forms,not sheet forms, which will lead to high Scrap rate of the carbide insert. For this situation, we can choose diamond coating tools, which can protect the cutting edges, reduce blade wear. It can obtain excellent performance when process graphite electrode, and improve the tool life and efficiency.
2. Diamond Coating tools not suit for hardened steel
Because diamond is consist of carbon atom. When machining iron materials, it will react with the carbon atom, forming carbide, which will make the diamond tools fail. So when machining hardened steel, you’d better choose cbn inserts. For hardened steel, you can choose BN-H10,BN-H21,ect.
Halnn diamond coating tools, adopt CVD method, deposit a layer diamond film on the carbide or ceramic base, which can improve the tool life and other performance. They are mainly used for machining Aluminum,Graphite, Ceramic, Carbon Fiber, Glass fiber, widely used in automotive,3C, aerospace industries.
For example:
When machining graphite electrode, the cutting tips will easily become dull, and affect the process efficiency;
When machining carbon fiber composite materials, the tool life will be very short, which will affect the surface roughness
All these problems can be solved with diamond coating tools, and improve their efficiency and tool life.
3. Diamond coating tool not suit for re-grinding
Re-grinding or re-coating diamond tools, the quality can’t Guarantee, because of the surface coating is pure diamond, which has high hardness and good abrasive resistance, if re-grinding, it not only needs too much time, but also may change the chemical characteristics, can’t guarantee high precision.
4. The tool life of the diamond coating tools
As with any other tool, the life of a diamond coating tool also varies, depending on the material being cut, the feed rate and cutting speed and the geometry of the workpiece. Generally, the tool life of diamond coating tools for machining graphite will be about 10~20 times of carbide insert. Thus, 1 insert can finish all the process, and avoid some problems of processing interrupt, change the insert, which can realize high speed machining.
Halnn Superhard can offer diamond coating service for turning, milling, drilling and other tools. And we also can offer other coating service for ISO CBN tools, the coating hardness is high and has stable performance.
