Aluminum alloy are widely used for producing pistons because of its light weight, good Thermal conductivity and low Thermal expansion coefficient. Even the cutting force when machining aluminum alloy is smaller than that machining steel, the aluminum alloy is soft, it will easily stick the cutters and then affect the surface roughness.
In order to add the strength of the aluminum alloy materials, the manufacturers usually add silicon elements, which is evenly distributed in the aluminum alloy, and these particle have high hardness (about HV1000), the insert will be wear easily in the cutting process.
When the content of silicon is over 8%, we advise Halnn PCD Tools, which has high hardness and toughness, and can ensure good surface roughness and tool life. Usually, we called the aluminum alloy whose silicon content is over 12% as high silicon aluminum alloy.
With Halnn PCD tools cutting aluminum alloy, the tool life will be about tens or hundreds times of carbide inserts. PCD Tools are the ideal cutting tools for machining aluminum alloy pistons. And has been used for finish turning pistons grooves, finish boring cylinder, finish turning piston top and other process.
