Rolls classification:
Based on the rolls hardness, the mill rolls can be divided into 3 types:
(1)Low hardness rolls (2)High hardness cast iron rolls (3) High hardness forged steel rolls
Part 1 Turning low hardness rolls
Low hardness rolls includes ductile iron rolls, high alloy cast iron rolls, all of them are usually used for mid-rolls, supporting rolls, these characteristics are low hardness comparing with working rolls. So turning these rolls usually use carbide insert.
Part 2 Turning high hardness cast iron rolls
High hardness rolls including chilled cast iron rolls, high chromium cast iron rolls, high boron nitride rolls, ect. Because they will have some defects, such as sand, stomach, which will require high on the impact resistance, heat resistance, abrasive resistance of the insert. In current times, BN-K1 is the best choice for turning rolls. And BN-K1 have kept the hardness high hardness of the cbn inserts and have excellent abrasive resistance, impact resistance, and can be used for roughing process.

Part 3 Turning high hardness forged steel cold rolls
Forged steel cold rolls include Gear steel rolls, bearing steel rolls, such as GCr15 rolls, Cr3, 9Cr2Mo. These rolls are forged steel blank, usually used for cold rolls, and we recommend BN-S20 solid cbn inserts. BN-S20 not only have good performance of BN-K1, is researched specific for forged steel rolls. When machining the forged steel rolls, the wear resistance will be about 3 times of common cbn inserts.
