The ball screw is one typical hardened steel shaft part, need to confirm the work table position and transfer the power, is the first choice for Mechanical transmission, and required high on the precision, strength and abrasive resistance.
Normally we use 42CrMo and GCr15 as the main materials for machining ball screw, the hardness after quenching steel will reach HRC60~62. In the current times, the manufactuers use grinding as the main process, but it has low grinding efficiency, and it will require high on the workers technology, and will lead to high rejection rate. With turning instead of grinding widely used, ball screw begin to use turning process as the final process instead of grinding process.
However, turning instead of grinding will require high on the cutting tools performance, and traditional cutting tools will wear rapidly, change the insert frequently will not only affect the efficiency, but also can’t control the surface roughness and dimension precision.
With the improvement of the cutting technology, Halnn researched BN-S20 solid cbn insert with non-metal adhesive, which can be used for large allowance( roughing and large allowance machining). BN-S20 is different with other common PCBN Insert, it has excellent impact resistance, and use ultrathin nano particle, and has good abrasive resistance. When hard turning hardened steel shaft, the tool life can be 4 times more than other PCBN Insert. Because of good impact toughness, the cutting depth can reach 7.5mm, also suite for interrupt turning process.
