Aluminum materials are widely used for machining pistons depending on the materials advantages of light weight, good conductdivity and low thermal expansion coefficient. Even though the cutting force when machining Aluminum is smaller than that when machining steel, but because Aluminum is soft, it will easily stick the insert in the process, which will affect the surface roughness.
When producing the pistons, in order to increase the strength of Aluminum alloy materials, the manufacturers usually add many Silicon elements. Since silicon has a corrosive effect on the carbide alloy, silicon element is uniformly distributed in the form of particles inside the aluminum alloy materials, and the hardness of the silicon particle is high(about 1000HV) which resulting in serve cutting of the insert edge during the process.
When the silicon content is above 8%, Halnn will recommend PCD Inserts, when machining Aluminum alloy, the tool life of PCD Tools will be about 10 or 100 times of carbide inserts, is the ideal cutting tools for machining
