Ball Screw is one of the common transmission components in machine tools and other high precision machines, it requires high on the precision, usually use heat treatment to obtain high durability and toughness. However, the ball screw after heat treatment has high hardness, when machining that with traditional cutting tools ,it usually has the following problems:
(1)The hardness of ball screw after heat treatment will be about HRC58~62, traditional cutting tools (ceramic cutters, carbide inserts, coating insert) will wear easily, and affect the process efficiency.
(2)When machining the raceway of the ball screw, the insert will be easily chipping because of the high pressure between the insert and the ball screw.
(3)When machining the screw of the ball screw, it belongs to interrupt turning condition, and requires high on the toughness of the cutting tools
In current times, depending on the requirements of the ball screw, cbn insert is the most suitable cutting tools, especially BN-S20 CBN Grade. BN-S20 Solid CBN Insert has the following advantages:
(1)High hardness, excellent abrasive resistance,when machining high hardness ball screw, it will reduce the dimensional deviation and dispersion
(2)It has high heat stability and high temperature hardness, when the cutting temperature is high, the materials will become soften, which will be benefit for cutting, and not affect the life of BN-S20.
(3)It has high Antioxidant capacity, and will not react with iron materials in the temperature of 1000~1200℃.
(4) It has low friction coefficient, it will not easily produce Stagnant layer,which is benefit for improving the surface quality.

Note: When hard turning ball screw with BN-S20 Solid CBN, it didn’t need to add cutting fluid, need to use dry cutting methods, or it will appear chipping or other abnormal phenomenon, which will affect the process efficiency.
